5–6 days. Two adults plus a 3.5 year old. Just nice weather. Incredible food. Real cultural experiences. Which one?
July is the sweet spot for both. Yunnan offers spring-like weather at a fraction of the cost. Hokkaido delivers lavender fields, world-class food, and Japan's legendary kid infrastructure. Here's how they stack up.
"Spring City" Kunming at 23–25°C. Ancient Bai architecture in Dali. Naxi culture, yak meadows, and turquoise pools in Lijiang. Bullet trains between cities. Crossing-the-bridge noodles, wild mushroom hotpot. Stays well within budget.
Peak lavender season, 20–26°C. Mareunuma Park's incredible playgrounds. Farm Tomita's endless purple fields. Ramen, soup curry, fresh uni, Hokkaido dairy. Japan's golden-standard toddler infrastructure. Car rental setup needed for Furano.
Everything that matters at a glance.

You want out of SEA, you like China, and Steffi hates Bali. Yunnan hits every note: genuinely cool weather (18–26°C), 4h direct flight, visa-free, way under budget at ~SGD 3,200, bullet trains between cities (toddler-friendly), incredible food, and real cultural experiences that are nothing like anywhere you've been. The only catch is July rain (brief afternoon showers) and needing a VPN. But these are manageable trade-offs for a trip that costs less than Hokkaido's flights alone.
July is peak season for both destinations. Book flights 3–4 months ahead (Feb–Mar 2026). Scoot early bird fares: SGD 400–500/pax to KMG, SGD 500–600/pax to CTS. Consider ScootPlus for the 7h Hokkaido flight.
Yunnan: Book via Trip.com. Stay near Green Lake (Kunming), Dali Old Town (courtyard inn), Shuhe over Dayan (Lijiang). Hokkaido: Book via Booking.com. MIMARU apartments great for families. Shin Furano Prince Hotel for on-site dining + Ningle Terrace access.

Yunnan tip: Pack layers. Evenings in Lijiang drop to 13–15°C. Hokkaido tip: Lavender festivals in late July. Check dates for Kamifurano Lavender Festa. Book Furano hotel early.
